One of the essential tools we can use to enhance safety in educational settings is searching, which can include checking bags, lockers, personal belongings, and the person themselves. However, it is often avoided due to staff not feeling confident in conducting the search due to lack of understanding of their powers, rights, and responsibilities.
This 1-day course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to conduct searches of young people and individuals in a lawful, professional, and dignified manner. Emphasis will be placed on the correct use of handheld metal detectors, compliance with relevant legislation, and the importance of respecting individuals' rights with the aim of increasing confidence and understanding of the staff members in this delicate area.
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Conduct Safe and Respectful Searches
o Effectively conduct searches in a manner that is respectful of student rights and adheres to school policies and legal standards.
2. De-escalate Conflicts
o Demonstrate the ability to de-escalate conflicts through strategic communication, leading to improved student outcomes and a safer school environment.
3. Enhance School Safety
o Contribute to a culture of safety within the school by applying learned techniques to prevent and manage crises.
4. Foster Positive Relationships
o Build stronger relationships with students by employing empathy and understanding during challenging interactions.
5. Create Action Plans
o Develop actionable plans for responding to specific situations involving potential search or de-escalation needs, enhancing preparedness and response capabilities.
6. Effective Reporting and Record Keeping
o Ensure that all searches are documented appropriately including finds and appropriate action is taken.
Participants will be assessed through a combination of practical demonstrations and a short test to confirm their understanding of the material. Successful participants will receive a certificate of completion, validating their competency in conducting lawful and dignified personal searches.
