Self-defence, being able to protect yourself and the ones that you love from harm, is such a vital yet understated and underrated skill. Many people believe that self-defence is "the physical act of defending oneself" and that this only happens after the violence has begun.
These people are WRONG!
There is so much more to self-defence than just being able to deliver a strike or block an incoming attack from a perpetrator. Yes, we may have to resort to our physical techniques and use the tool of violence (because that is what striking a perpetrator is) in order to extract from the area safely but, believe it or not, we don't just end up in the middle of a violent encounter without any prior warning. There is always a chain of events that lead up to a violent encounter being initiated and part of self=defence is being able to recognise these events and potentially avoid the violence.
"Why me?"
Victims of violence always ask after the violent incident things like, "Why me?".
There are a several answers to this question and it can be just one or a combination of these that can cause them to be a victim
- They were not aware that a violent event was looming so were unprepared to deal with.
- They were unable to do anything to protect themselves as they did not have the skillset to effectively deal with the situation.
- They were unwilling to do whatever is necessary in order to win this violent event
